Arkansas WAND’s Annual Membership dinner meeting was held on January 31, 2016 at Heifer Village in Little Rock with a record number of new and renewed members. In keeping with of our mission of “reducing violence and militarism” in the world, WAND Board member, Dr. Ellen Fitzpatrick, shared her thoughts on the intersection of international development, political policy, and violent conflict. Dr. Fitzpatrick is an Associate Professor of Economics at the Clinton School of Public Service and travels extensively to integrate and evaluate social capital in developing countries.

She previously directed the Latin American Studies program at the State University of New York, Plattsburgh where she placed students in service learning experiences in Latin America, Southeast Asia, Africa and Turkey. She developed a new major in global studies and taught courses on international political economy, sustainability and development, as well as global experiential learning. She earned the SUNY-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2010.

Fitzpatrick earned bachelors’ degrees in economics and Southeast Asian studies from the University of California-Santa Cruz, her master’s degree in agricultural economics at the University of California-Davis and a Ph.D. in agricultural economics at Michigan State University.
